Project Description
MLJ was approached by an independent brewery to develop land to the north of Kelham Island adjacent to the former Stones Bitter, Canon Brewery adjacent to the River Don.
The Kelham Island area of Sheffield is one of eleven quarters designated as predominantly industrial use however, the area over the last decade has been transformed into a cultural creative quarter that includes; warehouse living, art studios, musical recording studios, independent breweries, museums and specialist light industrial units.
Our client wanted a waterside building that not only reflected Sheffield’s proud steel making heritage, but a sculptural rhythmic facade that reflects the cities expertise with regards to cutting edge steel fabrications that are still produced.
The brief was to provide a functioning micro brewery with hospitality/conference facilities, musical performance studios, a 600 seat performance Theatre with associated hospitality and customer toilets, start up offices with a spacious rooftop function area for private functions offering views across the regenerated, inner city quarter.
